MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

The MRI uses harmless magnetic fields and radio waves instead of X-rays to generate visual images of the brain, spine, and other areas of the body. This helps physicians make more accurate and earlier diagnoses than was possible with older types of technologies. The MR scan is painless, has no side effects, and is risk-free for most patients.

A highly trained technologist performs the MR scan. The MRI machine has a donut-like hole in the center. You will be asked to lie down on a table that is then moved into position in the hole, and you will be asked to lie very still while the imaging is taking place. You are given earplugs, to help reduce the thumping sound that occurs during the imaging process. It is best if you can relax (even take a nap), as long as you lie still, since movement will blur the image. The technologist does not stay in the room with you during the test, but is in constant touch with you through a microphone and sound system. One image generally takes between five to fifteen minutes to complete; and your full exam can last from 20 minutes to around one hour depending on how many images your doctor wants.

To prepare for the test:

  • If you are claustrophobic, (panic in small spaces) ask your doctor to prescribe a sedative medicine for you to take before the MR scan.
  • Continue to take all of your regular medications.
  • Eat and drink normally before the exam.

IMPORTANT: You may NOT have an MRI scan if you have any of the following conditions:

Cerebral aneurysm clips
Certain heart valves
Cochlear implants
Metal filings in the eye
Pacemaker
Certain metal implants
