ENG (Electronystagmography)
ENG is a test to assist in diagnosing dizziness, unsteadiness or
other problems with balance and coordination. The test consists
of recording eye movements during a variety of circumstances including
the application of warm and cool air to your ears. The test takes
one to two hours, is performed by a technologist and is interpreted
with the assistance of a computer.
ENG may cause dizziness and/or nausea. Patients should arrange for
transportation after the examination.
To prepare for the test:
- DO NOT use lotions or creams on your face before the test (no
liquid base makeup on your face).
- Clean your ears with a warm washcloth before the test.
- Do not eat large amounts of food before the test.
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to the test.
- The following medications should be discontinued 72 hours prior
to this exam: antihistamines such as Dimetapp or other cold medications.
Do not use any medication for dizziness such as Antivert, Meclizine,
Scopolamine, or any patch that is used to suppress dizziness.
All of the above medications will alter the results of the test.
- DO NOT stop other medications necessary for your health such
as anti-seizure drugs, heart, blood pressure or diabetic drugs,
etc. Ask us if you have any questions about medications.
